Drop-icing

To be quite honest, I have no idea what this technique is called. I saw it on a blog I subscribe to, Sweetopia.  In this post, a guest blogger had “monogrammed” her cookies by dropping these fancy letters onto an iced cookie. You can read more about it here.

Basically, you print out a few fancy fonts and trace over them onto a sheet of wax paper by piping royal icing with a small tip (#1 or #2 works best for letters with lots of swirls and details).  If you want to sprinkle non pareils or sanding sugar, it’s best to use the same color as the icing. Let it dry for a few hours, peel them off and drop them onto an iced cookie (icing should still be wet).

Here, I just secured it onto fondant with some icing because I was too lazy to ice a new cookie:

After realizing this was fairly easy and entirely doable, a world of possibilities opened — i can trace almost ANYTHING and it would come out perfectly..!

I’m sad that her eyes bled, but this could have been avoided if I had just been patient and let her face dry completely before dotting her eyes.   My sorority’s Formals is this upcoming weekend, 4/17 so I plan to use these hello kitty icing pieces to make cookies for the girls.

If all goes well, I’ll post pictures!

    Hi,
Just want to let you know that this technique is called ‘Runouts’. I haven’t tried it myself and yours look really great.

You can do it with royal icing or melted chocolate. I’ve seen it done by the Liv Hansen, author of the Whimsical Bakehouse books and you can make them really detailed – like drawings. The only difference between using Royal Icing and chocolate is that you have to use candy oil colours for the tinting as ordinary food colourings don’t blend well enough with the chocolate and leaves spots.

I read about decorating more than I do. I still think you’re work is great. At least it’s real. Half of my stuff is still in my head.

Runouts! Thanks for the info! I’ve never done it with chocolate, but that sounds like something I’d definitely want to try sometime. I haven’t been very good with chocolate in the past but it’s always good to keep trying!

      Thanks Jude!

Although you keep giving that disclaimer stressing that you aren’t a professional :) – I wouldn’t have known! You do a superb job! I have been a cake decorator for 11 years and I have learned so much from your site :) Keep up the good work!
